WHY WE CREATED THIS PROTOCOL

Women’s physiology requires a different approach

Women move through stress, recovery, and regulation in a different physiological context than men. Hormonal rhythms, nervous system load, cognitive demand, and the realities of daily life can all shape how support is felt and needed.

Cognitive Clarity was shaped with that in mind. Designed for women, it supports moments when the body feels overloaded, thinking feels less clear, or the system feels harder to settle.

It offers a more thoughtful way back to a steadier state — one that feels grounding, supportive, and easier to enter when it is needed.

Early reactions to Cognitive Clarity Protocol

Shared during the protocol’s pre-release introduction at the LAFD Women’s Wellness Workshop.

“First of all, the live music and the rhythm of it were really something different from what I’ve done before. I felt it in my body in a different way. It was so grounding, like a core sensation. I don’t know if I have the words to describe it.”

Irene

Workshop participant

“I felt like I was forced out of thinking about anything else because of all the vibrations. Instead of my mind wandering, I had to stay present in what I was feeling. This could help other women in fire. You get a lot of people whose minds wander all the time, so it’s hard to meditate. I think it could really help bring people back to a calmer state, settle their nervous system, and relax their mind.”

“It was very relaxing. It’s definitely hard for me to let go, release, and actually relax. But once I did, it felt really great. I think it would reduce stress. If you could do the 15 minutes and just relax, it definitely brings your levels down.”

“I liked the guided meditation, and the vibrations were very interesting. I’ve seen some studies on it, so I thought it was interesting to experience. I could see it as a decompression tool before bed or after a workout.”

McKenna

L.A. County Fire firefighter paramedic

“It took me a bit to really lean into it, and then it felt like a meditative state. I could literally feel energy coming off my arms. That was awesome. I didn’t realize it had already been 15 minutes.”

“Oh, that was great. Very relaxing. I definitely feel a lot better after that. A lot of the time, with the job, you’re going and you’re stressed for most of the shift, and then it’s hard to decompress after that. This feels like a good way to help that relaxation happen. It kind of forces it in a way, but it’s helpful.”

THE WOMEN BEHIND THE PROTOCOL

Shaped by women across recovery, performance, and protocol design

Cognitive Clarity was shaped through collaboration between women working across recovery, performance, and protocol design. Their perspectives helped inform a protocol grounded in real experience, careful listening, and a more thoughtful understanding of the support women may need.

EARLY FIELD LEARNING

How this was first experienced in the field

Before release, Cognitive Clarity was introduced at the LAFD Women’s Wellness Workshop in early March 2026, offering an initial opportunity to observe how the protocol was experienced outside the lab.

These early observations were preliminary, but they reinforced the importance of continuing to learn from women’s direct feedback and lived experience.

During these sessions, participants reported shifts in areas such as relaxation, clarity, emotional state, and energy.

That early learning helped inform this release and shape the decision to invite continued participation in a structured study as the work evolves.

Help shape what comes next

We’re currently learning directly from women using Shiftwave — and your experience is an important part of that. Your input doesn’t just sit in a report. It directly informs how we evolve our protocols, what we prioritize in research, and how we design future experiences. If you have a few minutes, we’d really value your participation. Each check-in is simple: • before your session • after your session • ~5 minutes total
You can take part whenever it suits you.
